The 39-year-old, who was found with a rope wrapped around her throat and torso, struggled to survive in the last minutes of her life, the Daily News reported.
Police said William Caruth, 61, had bite marks on both hands and a cut on the bridge of his nose when he was taken into custody.
Valentina Caiazzo, the previous owner of the family's apartment, told the News:
"She really fought for her life.(Anndrea) was the nicest person. I thought she was good ... this is a shocker."Mum-to-be Anndrea disappeared on Sunday morning. She had been strangled and smashed in the head, suffering skull fractures and brain injuries.
He then placed a piece of plywood and a rug over the hole — but the smell of the body wafted into the house.
A machete and a hammer were recovered from the home, and two additional buckets of gravel were found outside the residence on Corsa Avenue. She was five months pregnant.
There was a dispute between the father and daughter over a second mortgage taken out on the home by Anndrea Caruth, with the dad apparently giving the cash to someone else, one source said.
Records indicate the murdered daughter, four years after taking out a mortgage on the property, took out a larger $280,000 (£191,000) mortgage in 2006.
