Hired Students Vandalise Govt Properties over Unpaid Mobilisation Fees in Imo

On Monday, students’ campaign rally staged in favour of Governor Rochas Okorocha turned violent in Owerri, Imo state, as the students turned around to protest against Okorocha. As early as 8.30am, students numbering over 10,000 gathered by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Students Affairs, Godstime Samuel, flocked at Okorocha’s campaign office at Okigwe for the rally.

The students were 80 each from the 27 council areas in the state, and they staged massive rally and roadshow for the governor and reconvened at the freedom square where they were addressed by the Commissioner for Lands, Chief Uche Nwosu and later the governor himself who promised them N4million.

At the end of the rally, the Executive Assistant,  Godstime Samuel presented  the sum of N1.5million to be shared among over 10,000 young men, and this was what triggered the problem, as Samuel disappeared from the scene. Angry and unable to locate their contact man for explanations and completion of the money, anger led to frustration and a massive student rampage erupted.

The students started chanting solidarity songs in favour of the PDP and Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, marched into the government house and forced workers to run for safety. The students vandalised and destroyed anything that stood in their way.

Okorocha’s posters and billboards were torn to shreds, street lampholders, APC flags along the government house were destroyed and traffic was grounded to a halt. However, the mobile policemen arrived the scene and dislodged the defiant youths with teargas.
