Starred for Athletic Bilbao in the 40s and 50s where he bagged an astonishing 251 goals in 277 games, as he claimed the Pichichi Trophy on six occasions. Also had a strike rate of a goal a game for Spain having scored 20 goals in as many games between 1945 and 1954.
2. Lionel Messi (Argentina) 249
The La Masia graduate has plundered league 249 goals in 284 games for Barcelona. During the 2011-12 season the four-time world player of the year hit 50 goals in 37 games and followed that up with 46 in 31 games during the 2012-13 season. He is still only 27 – and will surely add to his already impressive three Pichichi trophies.
3. Hugo Sanchez (Mexico) 234
Made his name in Spain with Atletico Madrid, where he scored 54 goals in 111 games before making the switch to cross-town rivals Real, where he hit league 164 goals in 207 appearances. The Mexico striker was part of the team that won five consecutive titles from 1985-86 to 1989-90 before winding down his career in Spain at Rayo Vallecano.
4. Raul (Spain) 228
Started out at Atletico Madrid before the club’s then president Jesus Gil made the disastrous decision to close their academy. Raul moved to Real and then became the club’s all-time top scorer.
5. Alfredo di Stefano (Argentina/Spain) 227
Di Stefano was a central figure in the Madrid team that dominated the European Cup in the 50s. His exploits for the club saw the “Blond Arrow” second on Madrid’s all-time scorers list. He scored six in six for the Argentine national team before switching allegiance to Spain, for whom he scored 23 goals in 31 games.
6. Cesar Rodriguez (Spain) 223
He scored the lion’s share of his goals for Barcelona (192), for whom he represented between 1939 and 1955, but also played for Granada, Cultural Leonesa and Elche. Cesar also bagged six goals for Spain in 12 appearances, and would go on to manage Barcelona during the 1963-64 season.
7. Quini (Spain) 219
Represented both Sporting Gijon and Barcelona in Liga, but had a rather disappointing record of eight goals in 35 appearances for the Spanish national team.
8. Pahino (Spain) 210
Another Real Madrid stalwart but began his career at Celta Vigo. Hit 108 goals in 124 games for Madrid but represented Spain on only three occasions - hitting the net three times. Claimed the Pichichi Trophy on two separate occasions.
9. Edmundo Suarez (Spain) 195
Known as Mundo, he scored the majority of his goals (186) for Valencia between 1939 and 1950 before winding down his career with CD Alcoyano. His exploits in front of goal saw him claim the Pichichi Trophy twice in the early 40s and saw him represent Spain on three occasions.
10 Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) 190
Has scored an outrageous 190 goals in 171 league games for the Spanish club at a strike rate of 1.11 – will surely surpass Raul as Real’s record scorer.
