Romario was known for his movement and goal-poaching qualities and was labeled by Johan Cruyff as "the genius of the goal area". The Brazilian is one of only a very few strikers to get over 1,000 career goals and was awarded 'World Player Of The Year' in 1994. Romario scored 71 times in just over 80 games for his nation and was instrumental in Brazil winning the World Cup in 1994.

The greatest goalscorer of all time - Peyroteo scored 331 goals in only 191 for Sporting Lisbon, no other player in history can match this goals-to-game ratio (1.68 goals a game). Peyroteo once scored 9 goals in one match, as well as scoring 8 in another and 6 on more than one occasion. A real clinical striker.

Gerd Muller was a top striker for both club and country where he scored lots of goals and helped them both win trophies. The former Bayern Munich man who was nicknamed "Der Bomber" due to his explosive finishing was awarded the Balon d'Or in 1972. At club level, Muller won four Bundesliga titles, 4 German cups and 3 consecutive European cups. Although he was undoubtedly a brilliant goalscorer at club level, he was even better on the International stage, scoring 68 goals in 62 caps, helping Germany win the World Cup in 1974 and Euro's in 72.

Sadly, Marco Van Basten's career as cut short due to injury, at the age of just 27, but despite this, The Dutchman makes number 7. During a career in which he scored 218 goals in 280 games, MVB managed to win 3 Dutch titles, 3 Serie A titles and 2 European Cups. He was also a key man in Hollands 1988 Euro winning team where he scored a spectacular volley in the final. Marco Van Basten picked up 3 Balon d'Or's. Only Lionel Messi has picked up more

Ronaldo was the most feared striker of the late 90's to early 2000's. His quick, skillful attributes added to his lethal finishing made him undoubtedly one of the greatest ever. During his club career, Ronaldo won a Dutch cup, a Brazilian cup, 2 La Liga titles and a UEFA cup. At International level, Ronaldo helped Brazil win 2 World Cups (1994 and 2002). Ronaldo was named FIFA World Player Of The Year on 3 occasions and also holds the record for most goals scored at the World Cup  (15).

Eusebio is one of the biggest names in the history Portuguese football. Hi power and speed helped carry Benfica through there best ever period and contributed to them winning 11 league titles, 5 Portuguese cups and the Champions League twice. By the end of his sensational career, Eusebio scored 727 goals in 715 games! The Benfica legend was named European Footballer Of The Year in 1966, after leading Portugal to the World Cup Semi-Finals.

Puskas was nicknamed "The Galloping Major" and throughout his career, Puskas won 5 Hungarian titles, 5 Spanish league titles, and 2 European trophies. Puskas also scored 514 games in 529 appearances and despite either taking years out of the game or playing unfit, the Hungarian was prolific and is still today labeled as a International hero wherever he goes in Hungary. Puskas scored 84 times in 85 games for his nation and almost single-handedly won them a all a Gold medal at the Olympics in in 1952.

I know you're probably wondering why Maradona is only 3rd in the list, but considering he was not really even a striker that is not bad. A life which was filled with much controversy on and off the field, was always over shadowed by his footballing ability. His dribbling skills which made him so hard to stop, helped him win many honors with both club and country. At club level, Maradona won an Argentina league title, a Spanish Cup, 2 Serie A titles and a UEFA Cup. The latter 2 were with Napoli, who he helped turn into a European force. At national level, he inspired Argentina to World Cup glory in 1986, scoring a goal of the highest quality against England but also scoring the "Hand Of God" goal, along the way

Pele who is often called "The King Of Football" in Brazil, spent the majority of his playing days at Santos, where he won a trophy almost every year, making him the player with most career titles ever. Pele is the only a player to have won 3 World Cup medals, playing a huge part in all 3. Pele went on to score over 70 times in 92 appearances for his country, a record which still stands today. His goals tally is also the best in history scoring an incredible 1281 goals in 1363 games. Some argue he is the Greatest footballer ever...

Lionel Messi, the only player in history to win 4 Balon d'Ors, is going top of the list. At the age of only 26, Lionel Messi has scored 223 times in just over 250 games and is often compared to fellow countryman Maradona for the similar style of play, Messi has won many honors, including 6 La Liga titles, 3 Champions Leagues and 2 UEFA Super Cups. Messi also last year broke Gerd Muller's record for most goals in a calendar year (91). The Argentine also scored in 21 consecutive matches only for the feat to come to an end due to an injury. At just 26, many think Messi's best is still yet to come and with at-least another 5 years left at the very top, Lionel Messi will surely go on many more individual and team honors.
